Are You Carbohydrate Sensitive?

Some of us are carbohydrate or sugar sensitive. Other terms used for this are: insulin resistant, or hyperinsulinemic. This means that your cells do not react effectively to insulin to store glucose for fuel. This results in sugar staying in your blood for too long, causing your body to overproduce insulin to force glucose into your cells, so they don't starve. This excess insulin in your blood stream increases body fat, causes damage to your arterial walls, affects your hormone balance, and may lead to diabetes and heart disease. You can be hyperinsulinemic (overproducing insulin) for several years before symptoms of diabetes and other diseases begin to show.

To tell if you are carbohydrate sensitive ask these questions:

  • Do you have alcoholism or diabetes in your family?
  • Do you get sleepy after meals?
  • Do you have a sweet tooth?
  • Are you constantly hungry?
  • Do you get regular headaches?
  • Do you have restless sleep?
  • Do you have excess body fat or cellulite, particularly around the stomach?
  • Do you suffer from mood swings?
  • Do you suffer from PMS?
  • Are you a compulsive eater?

If you answer “yes” to any of these questions

This means you are most likely carbohydrate sensitive and you need to be more diligent about managing the type and amount of carbohydrates you eat.
